Using only a topical anesthetic to numb the eye, the surgeon creates a small incision and uses high-energy sound waves to break the cataract into microscopic particles, which are then removed from the eye. To compensate for the removal of the eye’s natural lens, an intra-ocular lens (IOL) is implanted into the eye. After using this special small incision, the eye remains tightly sealed by the natural outward pressure within your eye and no stitches are usually required.

Eye Disease

One of the most important focuses of our practice here at Eye Physicians and Surgeons is the detection and treatment of eye disease. If left untreated, eye diseases such as glaucoma and macular degeneration can be very debilitating and seriously affect sight. Early detection is critical.

Glaucoma Management & Treatment

Glaucoma is an eye condition caused by increased pressure in the eye that can destroy the sensitive nerve fibers responsible for vision. Glaucoma affects approximately 2% of the population over the age of 35 and generally has no noticeable symptoms such as redness or pain. Glaucoma is most common in people with a family history of the disease, so anyone with a blood relative who has glaucoma should schedule an annual eye exam. Patients with systemic diseases such as diabetes, anemia or hardening of the arteries, as well as African Americans, are also at higher risk for glaucoma. Because glaucoma is such an elusive disease, early detection and treatment is imperative. During your examination, your eye pressure and the condition of the optic nerve will be measured. If signs of glaucoma exist, more tests will be conducted and your doctor will create an ideal treatment plan.

Macular Degeneration
Age-related macular degeneration is the leading cause of blindness in the United States. Activities that require good central vision such as reading, writing and carrying out certain domestic tasks are all affected by this disease. When both eyes are affected, patients can experience serious loss of quality of life and independence. The “good” news about macular degeneration is your doctor will be able to easily detect the disease during routine eye exams and, although there is no cure, may be able to recommend laser surgery to stabilize the condition. Additionally, low vision aids can often help patients get better use out of their decreased vision from macular degeneration.

Dry Macular Degeneration is, by far, the more common form of macular degeneration, occurring in 85% to 90% of patients with the disorder. This form appears as dry yellow spots in the back of the eye. Many patients experience only mild vision loss or distortion in the beginning stages. Although your vision will slowly and progressively decline, it will not cause complete blindness. You may have dry macular degeneration for many years without any significant change in your vision or lifestyle.

At this time, there are many treatments available for macular degeneration, some with questionable results. The only proven treatment at this time is laser surgery. Lasers are used to halt the progression of wet macular degeneration.

Since macular degeneration only affects the central portion of your vision, your peripheral vision remains intact. Other diseases, such as cataracts and glaucoma can destroy peripheral vision if left untreated. Both of these diseases can be treated or controlled to keep vision at its best. Eyelid Surgery

Blepharoplasty
Patients with droopy eyelids or eyebrows often experience headaches from involuntarily raising their eyebrows and using their forehead muscles to allow additional light to enter their eyes. So, in addition to improving the appearance of sad or tired eyes, eyelid surgery improves peripheral vision, allowing more light into the eye and improving driving safety. A very common problem addressed by blepharoplasty is unwarranted “bags” under the eyes. Our surgeons perform a precise surgical procedure from the inside of the lower eyelid, removing the unnecessary fat and skin from the eyelid area to establish well-defined eyes.

Is Eyelid Surgery Covered By Insurance?
Usually, upper eyelid surgery is covered by insurance. It is important to undergo specific testing to be sure that your condition warrants insurance coverage. A visual field test will be performed to determine your peripheral vision before surgery. Then, your eyelids will be held up to simulate eye surgery and you will be retested. If the difference between the two tests is significant, your insurance company will most likely provide coverage for the surgery.

Ptosis Repair
Another common eyelid problem is ptosis, pronounced “toe-sis,” which also causes your eyelids to droop. Ptosis occurs when the muscle that allows you to blink stretches or becomes unattached. Although ptosis can occur in both eyes, it often happens to only one eye, causing your eyelids to be uneven. Our surgeons use precise skill and the latest technology to perform ptosis surgery. Laser Skin Resurfacing
